rupertswood-sharks-reach-grand-final-set-for-showdown-saturday

UPDATE: The Rupertswood Sharks have made history by advancing to their first-ever grand final in the Essendon District Football League (EDFL). Following a decisive victory over Glenroy with a score of 12.9 (81) to 5.10 (40) on October 7, 2023, the Sharks are now gearing up for a highly anticipated showdown against Westmeadows this coming Saturday at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn.

This monumental achievement marks a significant turnaround for the Sharks, who joined the EDFL in 2021. They have faced numerous challenges, including relegation and injuries, but have persevered to reach this pivotal moment. Sharks co-coach Brad Fox expressed his excitement after the game, stating, “You do 10 months of training to get this opportunity, and it’s a win in itself to get the opportunity.”

The Sharks have shown remarkable resilience throughout the season, bouncing back from a mid-season slump that saw them lose three consecutive games. Fox emphasized the team’s growth, saying, “We touched on the journey we’ve had the past two years to get to this point.” The Sharks have cultivated a strong club culture that has attracted returning players.

In their preliminary final match against Glenroy, the Sharks displayed exceptional skill, leading from the start. Although the scoreboard reflected a comfortable win, Fox acknowledged that the match was tightly contested. “They hit the post a couple of times and we wasted a couple of opportunities,” he noted. “We lost a little bit of our composure up forward but we got it back and finished well.”

Star player Fraser Phelan-Smith shone brightly, kicking four goals and earning the title of best on ground for the second consecutive week. Other standout players included skipper Daniel Kavanagh and co-coach Clayton Bonello, who both contributed significantly to the Sharks’ success.

As Rupertswood prepares to face Westmeadows, they are keenly aware of the challenge ahead, having not secured a victory against them this season. “Their last win against us was with less than a second to go, a kick right on the siren,” Fox recalled. “We learned from that, and it will be a ripping grand final.”

The upcoming grand final promises to be a thrilling event, as the Sharks aim to claim their first EDFL title. Fans and supporters are urged to rally behind the team as they strive for victory on Saturday. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting showdown approaches!
