UPDATE: The start of the Bendigo District Cricket Association’s senior season has been officially delayed by one week, now set to begin on October 11. This urgent change was announced by the BDCA on Friday, citing the need for additional time to prepare wickets impacted by junior football finals.
BDCA president Travis Harling stated, “Our wickets won’t be ready; there’s a couple that have been impacted by junior footy finals, so they have only just had the chance to be top-dressed.” The current weather conditions have further complicated preparations, making it impossible to ensure quality playing surfaces for the upcoming matches.
This delay affects the anticipated two-day fixtures for round one, which include key matchups: Sandhurst vs. Strathdale-Maristians, Kangaroo Flat vs. White Hills, Bendigo United vs. Strathfieldsaye, Bendigo vs. Golden Square, and Huntly North vs. Eaglehawk. The BDCA board will meet on Monday night to discuss whether the planned two-day format will shift to a one-day game format for the opening round.
Harling emphasized the importance of giving teams adequate notice, saying, “The main thing today was to just give everyone the heads up around what is happening with the start date so the curators can ease their minds a bit.” This announcement brings clarity to teams and players who were preparing for the initial kick-off next weekend.
The BDCA season is structured for 12 rounds, with each team expected to play nine two-day matches and three one-day games. As reigning champions, Strathdale-Maristians will be eager to defend their title after last season’s grand final victory over Strathfieldsaye.
In related news, the Emu Valley Cricket Association is set to commence its season next weekend, with a return to nine teams following the inclusion of West Bendigo. The division one competition will feature 12 rounds, consisting of 10 games in total, including eight two-day matches and two one-day games.
As cricket fans await the start of both leagues, the changes in the BDCA schedule underscore the importance of weather and field conditions in sports preparation. With just days to go, players and coaches are urged to stay tuned for updates following the board’s crucial meeting on Monday.
