URGENT UPDATE: A severe weather warning has just been issued for millions in Perth as a fast-moving cold front is expected to bring heavy rain and destructive winds starting Thursday morning. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warns that this unusual spring weather could pose significant risks to residents.

Beginning at 8:00 AM AWST, forecasters predict north-westerly winds reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. This dangerous weather front will extend across the west coast and inland areas, affecting regions including Bunbury, Busselton, Mandurah, Margaret River, and Augusta.

According to senior meteorologist Angus Hines, while the rain is expected to be a “thin band,” it could trigger thunderstorms, amplifying the potential for hazardous conditions. Residents are urged to stay indoors, as the strong winds may cause falling power lines and trees.

“Unplug electrical appliances and do not use landline telephones if there is lightning,” BOM cautioned. “Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.”

Authorities are particularly concerned about flooding, advising everyone to keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams, and waterways. The weather system is forecast to linger throughout the day before shifting eastward towards South Australia by Thursday afternoon.

As this severe weather develops, a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is expected to emerge, driving moisture-laden air towards mainland Australia. Senior climatologist Lynette Bettio predicts wetter-than-average conditions for southern states from August to October.

Meanwhile, on the east coast, a high-pressure system will bring fog and frost across many areas. Brisbane may see showers on Thursday, while the southeastern regions, including parts of Queensland, will likely experience thunderstorms, albeit less severe.

In New South Wales, widespread fog and frost are anticipated, particularly in the central and southern areas. Sydney will experience light showers with a high of 17°C, while Canberra can expect light frost and sunny skies, reaching 16°C.

Further south, Victoria will also face foggy conditions with temperatures dipping below 5°C in many regions. However, Melbourne is forecast to enjoy sunny weather, peaking at 18°C.

As residents brace for this severe weather, all eyes remain on Perth, where the BOM emphasizes the need for safety precautions during this potentially life-threatening situation. The public is advised to remain vigilant and monitor updates from official sources.

This developing weather pattern is a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the importance of preparedness. Stay tuned for more updates as this situation evolves.
