UPDATE: Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer is currently in a stable condition and recovering well from a serious spleen injury sustained during a match against Australia. The injury occurred on 25 October 2023, when Iyer suffered a lacerated spleen after falling awkwardly while attempting to take a catch during the third ODI in Sydney.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed the positive news today, stating that Iyer has shown significant improvement and is on the road to recovery. “We spoke to him,” Suryakumar told reporters ahead of India’s upcoming five-match T20 series against Australia, which kicks off in Canberra on Wednesday. “When we got to know about his injury, I called him, but then I realized he didn’t have his phone. I contacted our physio, Kamlesh Jain, who assured us he’s stable.”

The BCCI reported that Iyer’s injury involved internal bleeding from blunt trauma to his abdomen, raising initial concerns about his health. Fortunately, a repeat scan has indicated significant improvement, and Iyer is now communicating effectively, which is a positive sign of his recovery.

In a further update, Suryakumar also mentioned that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was previously ruled out due to a quadriceps injury, has returned to fitness. “He did a bit of running and batting in the nets yesterday. He wanted to take a break today, but we had a team meeting,” Suryakumar added.

The cricket community is breathing a sigh of relief as Iyer’s condition stabilizes, emphasizing the importance of player health and safety. Fans and teammates alike are hopeful for his swift recovery and return to the pitch, as the T20 series against Australia approaches.
