UPDATE: A breathtaking Redgum Goanna carving by artist Brandon Kroon has just been unveiled in Condobolin, marking a significant cultural milestone for the local Wiradjuri people. This stunning artwork, measuring nearly five metres in length and 1.2 metres in diameter, is now a centerpiece of the town’s new Visitor Centre, which is set to open in June 2022.

Authorities report that the Lachlan Shire Council commissioned Kroon to transform three reclaimed logs from the installation of a bridge into unique works of art. By repurposing these logs, the council aims to preserve local heritage and provide a lasting legacy for future generations. The Redgum Goanna carving stands as a testament to this vision.

Kroon stated, “The Goanna is such a significant icon to this area and community. My hope is that all who see it can be reminded of how lucky and proud we are to live in a country with so much wild and rare beauty.” The council’s decision to commission this artwork over simply discarding the logs highlights a commitment to cultural preservation and community engagement.

The Redgum Goanna will be complemented by two additional carvings: one depicting local native animals and the other showcasing sports unique to the region. Each artwork will reflect the natural characteristics of the logs, ensuring no two pieces are alike.

Kroon, who has been carving for over seven years, shared his insights on working with Redgum wood, stating, “Redgum is a really nice wood to work with. It’s harder than a lot of woods that I would normally carve, but it finishes up so well.” He noted that although the carving process was challenging—requiring frequent sharpening of chainsaws due to the wood’s toughness—the outcome is extraordinarily rewarding.

The cultural significance of the Goanna is profound; it serves as a totem for the Wiradjuri people, representing not just the local fauna but also the connection to the land. Kroon expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to attract visitors and enhance community pride. “This project will be pretty cool for the town and I hope it will be a big drawcard,” he added.

As Kroon puts the finishing touches on this remarkable piece, locals and visitors alike are encouraged to witness the transformation of these logs into art that embodies both beauty and history. The unveiling of the Redgum Goanna is not just an artistic achievement; it’s a celebration of cultural identity and community spirit.

With the Visitor Centre’s opening on the horizon, anticipation is building in Condobolin. Residents are eager to embrace this artistic addition, which promises to enhance the local landscape and create a space for reflection on the region’s rich heritage. Expect more updates as the other carvings come to life, each telling a part of Condobolin’s story through the eyes of nature and sport.

Stay tuned for more developments on this captivating project and its impact on the community.
