survivor-speaks-out-12-year-sentence-for-abuser-in-dubbo-court

UPDATE: A survivor of sexual abuse has bravely come forward, revealing the lifelong trauma caused by her stepfather, who has just been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a series of heinous acts against multiple victims. The sentencing took place at the Dubbo District Court in October, where the now-62-year-old man faced justice for a staggering 27 years of abuse.

In a powerful statement read during the hearing, the survivor disclosed that she endured nearly 30 years of silence due to her abuser’s manipulation, which had devastating effects on her life. “It has been mentally, emotionally and physically draining,” she expressed, adding, “He took my childhood away … I was made to just sweep it under the rug.”

The survivor’s harrowing account highlights the emotional toll of abuse, stating, “I constantly feel embarrassed because I thought, ‘why did I not speak up?'” Her courage to finally report the abuse on August 29, 2022, came after her stepfather’s granddaughters bravely shared their own traumatic experiences.

The court heard that the man’s offenses included sexually touching children under the age of 10 and engaging in sexual intercourse with minors aged 10 to 16. His actions were described as a “startling” breach of trust, leaving a lasting impact on all victims involved.

During the hearing, one of the granddaughters, who was only 10 years old at the time of her abuse, shared her feelings of betrayal, saying, “I trusted him and I loved him.” She expressed how the abuse shattered her sense of safety, making her feel “different” from her peers and scared to sleep alone at night.

Another victim, just six years old when she was assaulted, revealed that the trauma haunts her daily, causing nightmares and anxiety about leaving the house. “I don’t trust people easily,” she stated, illustrating the profound impact of her grandfather’s actions on her young life.

District Court Judge Troy Anderson acknowledged the victims’ statements when delivering the sentence, emphasizing the defendant’s lack of remorse. He sentenced the man to an aggregate term of 12 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 7 years and 9 months. With time served since his arrest, he is set to be eligible for release on February 28, 2033.

This case underscores the urgent need for awareness and support for survivors of sexual abuse. The emotional burden carried by victims often lasts a lifetime, and speaking out can be an essential step toward healing. As communities rally around these brave individuals, it is imperative to foster environments where victims feel safe and supported in sharing their stories.

As developments continue, many are watching closely for the impact this case will have on the broader conversation surrounding abuse and the importance of believing survivors. The powerful testimonies heard in court serve as a reminder of the resilience of those who have faced unimaginable trauma and the urgent need for justice in cases of sexual violence.
