This agreement, finalized during the India Maritime Week in Mumbai, underscores Svitzer’s commitment to its electrification roadmap and positions India as a central player in global maritime manufacturing.
Under this collaboration, Svitzer and CSL plan to develop a new generation of electric TRAnsverse tugs at CSL’s facilities. This initiative not only aims to enhance local shipbuilding capabilities but also aligns with India’s ambition for sustainable and efficient port operations. The TRAnsverse design is renowned for its exceptional maneuverability and energy efficiency, making it a game-changer in reducing emissions and operational costs in confined waters.
Kasper Nilaus, CEO of Svitzer, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “With this LoI, we are taking a decisive step on our electrification journey. India’s shipbuilding ecosystem—and CSL’s proven track record—make Cochin a great place to further develop and build the TRAnsverse.” He emphasized the alignment with the Government of India’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, showcasing a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Madhu S Nair, Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard Limited, commented, “We look forward to working closely with Svitzer to make plans for building the next-generation TRAnsverse tug in India.” He highlighted that this collaboration will enhance local supply chains and accelerate the availability of green, high-performance tugboats for both domestic and international ports.
The partnership represents a significant step toward decarbonizing the towage sector, aiming to deliver cleaner and safer harbor operations. As the need for sustainable port infrastructure grows, Svitzer’s expertise in decarbonization and robust asset mix is set to enhance the sustainability of port operations across India.
This development is expected to create local jobs, boost engineering talent, and elevate India’s status as a leader in green maritime technology. The electric TRAnsverse tugs are also intended to support Svitzer’s global fleet renewal strategy and cater to emerging growth markets worldwide.
As this collaboration unfolds, industry experts will be closely monitoring the progress and potential impact on India’s maritime industry. Stay tuned for more updates as Svitzer and Cochin Shipyard take significant steps toward a greener future in maritime operations.
