BREAKING NEWS: Sydney Airport has just announced its most ambitious upgrade in over two decades, unveiling a comprehensive expansion plan for its domestic terminal complex that aims to accommodate over 70 million passengers by 2045. This major development, part of the airport’s 2045 masterplan, includes a new terminal connecting the existing T2 and T3 domestic terminals, adding 12 new gates to enhance travel efficiency.
The project is expected to be completed between late 2027 and early 2028, pending funding approvals. In addition to the domestic terminal expansions, there are plans for two additional gates at the T1 international terminal. This new precinct will facilitate regional, domestic, and international flights all under one roof, significantly improving passenger experience.
According to Sydney Airport CEO Scott Charlton, the expansion is crucial to meet growing demand as the airport is projected to handle nearly 80 percent of all major air travelers in Sydney by 2045. “Meeting this growing demand, while continuing to provide a world-class experience, is no small task,” Charlton stated. He emphasized the airport’s commitment to safety, accessibility, customer service, and environmental performance.
The expansion is expected to drive an estimated $70.6 billion annually into the local economy by 2045. International travelers are projected to increase from under 40 percent to nearly half of all passengers, reflecting a significant shift in travel patterns.
Notably, freight volume is also set to surge from 600,000 tonnes currently to 1.4 million tonnes by 2045. However, much of this freight capacity will transition to the upcoming Western Sydney International Airport, which is anticipated to handle approximately 546,700 tonnes by 2045.
The announcement comes as Sydney prepares for the opening of its long-awaited second airport next year. Authorities have outlined that the airport’s expansion is not solely about increased capacity; it aims to significantly enhance the passenger experience, especially during peak travel days.
In addition to operational expansions, the report highlights Sydney Airport’s environmental strategy, targeting net zero emissions by 2030. This commitment underscores the airport’s dedication to sustainable growth while managing increased passenger and freight traffic.
As the airport gears up for this transformative project, stakeholders are urged to stay informed about funding developments and the timeline for construction. With the potential for increased jobs—expected to rise from over 354,800 to 559,000 by 2045—this expansion promises to have a profound impact on local communities.
