UPDATE: In a shocking discovery, police raided a property in Double Bay, Sydney, uncovering a cache of fake law enforcement badges and replica firearms. A 50-year-old man has been arrested and is set to face court on Saturday as authorities reveal alarming details about the operation.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) initiated their investigation after a concerned citizen turned in a federal police badge and ID at the Bondi Police Station last month. During the investigation, traces of cocaine were allegedly found on the ID, prompting police to act swiftly.
On Friday, officers executed a search warrant at the man’s residence, reportedly discovering multiple fake badges and identification cards from various agencies. The raid also yielded replica firearms, gel blasters, an array of hats and shirts emblazoned with AFP insignia, as well as steroids and 14 grams of cocaine.
The suspect now faces serious charges, including possessing prohibited firearms related to the gel blasters and replica weapons, impersonating a Commonwealth public official, and drug supply. Authorities stress the grave implications of such actions.
AFP Detective Superintendent Peter Fogarty stated, “Falsely representing yourself as any kind of law enforcement or Commonwealth official poses a genuine danger to public safety. This type of behavior is extremely concerning.”
