BREAKING: Just moments ago, 11-year-old Mia Honeyman has made waves in the tap dance world, clinching the title of Under 12 National Tap Champion at the Front and Centre National Finals. This remarkable achievement underscores Mia’s dedication and passion for dance, showcasing her talent on a national stage.
Mia, who hails from Coleambally, Australia, began her dance journey at just five years old with Shannon’s Dance Studio. Over the years, she has honed her skills in ballet, jazz, and tap, but it’s tap dancing that has captivated her heart. In April 2023, Mia took her first competitive steps, performing a routine choreographed by her instructor, Ms. Shannon Hart, during her parents’ wedding. That performance ignited her competitive spirit.
In early 2025, Mia participated in the prestigious Australian Tap Festival held in Melbourne, where she trained for six days at Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance alongside renowned tap dancer Winston Morrison. Mia’s training was rigorous, involving a minimum of two hours of practice daily, culminating in a performance at the sold-out Chapel Off Chapel Theatre.
Mia shared the stage with acclaimed dancers from both Australia and the United States, earning rave reviews for her talent and stage presence. “Melbourne was really fun,” Mia declared. “The best part was meeting many people from overseas.”
Her mother, Mel Honeyman, expressed immense pride in Mia’s journey, crediting Ms. Hart for nurturing her daughter’s talent. “Without Shannon, Mia wouldn’t be where she is today,” Mel stated. “Shannon gives her the confidence to push through and enjoy her passion.”
Recently, during the National Finals, Mia showcased her skills by performing four tap routines—waltz, slow, straight, and fast—impressing judges and securing three first-place awards and one third-place award in the elite section. “She loves fast tap because it allows her to express her personality,” Mel explained.
The tap dance community has welcomed Mia with open arms, providing encouragement and support. “When we were in Melbourne, everyone was so positive, cheering for her from the sidelines,” Mel noted.
Mia trains four days a week, with teachers praising her hard work, humility, and passion. Ms. Hart, who has over 40 years of experience, remarked on Mia’s incredible growth. “The judges have consistently praised her musicality, rhythm, and sound quality in tap,” she said.
As Mia continues to flourish in her dance career, she remains inspired by her mentor, stating, “I want to tap dance like her.” The future looks bright for this young talent, and it’s clear that her journey is just beginning.
Stay tuned for more updates on Mia’s incredible path in the world of dance. The tap community is eager to see what she accomplishes next!
