UPDATE: Whittlesea’s Tara Watson has suffered a devastating knee injury, sidelining her for a significant period. The Melbourne Vixens confirmed that Watson sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while competing for the Australian pathways team during a recent three-day international tour in Tonga.

Watson, only 20 years old, made a remarkable debut in the 2025 season as the Vixens’ eleventh player, contributing to a thrilling preliminary final victory against the NSW Swifts. Known for her versatility, she plays across all three midcourt positions and has been a standout in her age group’s state and national squads since 2021.

“This news is incredibly disappointing for Tara, who made such a strong impression in her first season with us,” stated Sharelle McMahon, Netball Victoria’s high performance and pathways general manager. “Tara is a valued member of our team and has a bright future ahead. We’ll support her every step of the way during her recovery.”

The Vixens are committed to providing Watson with the best possible care, highlighted by their world-class medical team and high performance program. “We know Tara is in great hands and has a strong support network around her,” McMahon added.

The injury underscores the challenges athletes face in high-stakes environments. As Watson begins her recovery journey, fans and teammates alike are rallying around her, emphasizing the emotional impact of this setback.

As the Vixens head into the 2025 season, they will be looking to fill the gap left by Watson’s absence. The team’s adaptability and resilience will be crucial as they navigate the competitive landscape of netball in Australia.
