UPDATE: In an electrifying weekend, Tarneit Central captured not one, but two cricket premierships in the North West Metropolitan Cricket Association, marking a historic achievement for the club. The victories came in the George Luscombe Shield and the Keith Stringer Shield, solidifying Tarneit’s dominance in local cricket.
On Sunday, Tarneit Central’s top side showcased their skills, overcoming the defending champions, the Merrifield Panthers, in the Luscombe Shield final. This victory comes after they finished as runners-up last season, making the win even sweeter. “It was a great day for the club,” said Amrit Bhangu, a key player in the team. “Both the Luscombe Shield and the Keith Stringer Shield were big wins for us.”
In a thrilling final, the Chargers batted first after winning the toss, setting a target of 217 runs. Tarneit responded with a stellar performance, finishing at 7-218 with more than 10 overs to spare. The team’s captain, Mandeep Singh, led from the front with a crucial innings of 57 runs, earning the title of player of the match. “He built up the pressure on the other team,” Bhangu praised.
The match was tightly contested, particularly after Tarneit lost quick wickets early on. However, the middle order held strong, ensuring they reached the target effectively. Tarneit’s bowlers shined as well, with Simranjeet Singh Cheema taking three wickets, while Gurpreet Singh and Kapilmeet Singh Sandhu contributed with two wickets each.
Meanwhile, in the Keith Stringer Shield final, Tarneit triumphed over the Panthers again, chasing down a score of 207 runs with an impressive 8-211. Gurinder Sohal was the standout player in this match, finishing unbeaten with a remarkable 123 runs to guide his team to victory.
These two championships come on the heels of Tarneit Central’s success in the Western Suburbs Churches and Community Cricket Association, where they won the division 1 T20 title, marking a remarkable season with three consecutive T20 titles.
“This has been a successful season,” Bhangu noted. “The boys will enjoy the win over the next couple of days before thinking about how to improve for next year.”
As Tarneit Central celebrates this historic achievement, the club’s triumph serves as a significant advertisement for local cricket, highlighting the talent and teamwork exhibited throughout the season. Fans and supporters are eager to see what the future holds for this rising cricket club.
