BREAKING: The TERA-Award 2026 has just launched with a groundbreaking $1.15 million prize pool, marking a significant expansion through strategic collaborations with the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). This urgent initiative aims to fast-track breakthrough energy technologies that are critical for addressing climate change.
Founded in 2021 by Dr. Peter Lee Ka-kit, the TERA-Award has rapidly emerged as a leading international platform, combining prize funding with real-world applications to support climate innovations. To date, the award has attracted nearly 2,000 projects from 76 countries, and has awarded a total of $4.65 million in funding.
In a major move to enhance its impact, TERA-Award’s partnership with UNCTAD will leverage global policy expertise and networks to connect innovative projects with international markets for swift deployment. Meanwhile, CISL will apply its advanced climate and energy research to evaluate and identify commercially viable projects.
Alan Chan Ying-lung, Executive Chairman of the TERA-Award Organising Committee, emphasized the importance of these collaborations: “By working alongside international organizations and governments, we aim to accelerate the real-world deployment of TERA-Award projects and deliver practical technology pathways for the global energy transition.”
For the 2026 edition, TERA-Award is introducing two new categories: AI × Energy and Next-Generation Energy. The AI × Energy category seeks to integrate artificial intelligence into energy systems to boost efficiency and address the increasing energy demands tied to rapid AI development. The Next-Generation Energy category will explore advanced nuclear technologies, including nuclear fusion and small modular reactors (SMRs), expanding the scope beyond traditional renewables.
InvestHK, a strategic partner of TERA-Award, highlights Hong Kong’s ecosystem as a critical facilitator for energy tech deployment. King Leung Hong-king, Global Head of Financial Services, FinTech & Sustainability, stated, “TERA-Award demonstrates how our policy support, research excellence, and global connectivity drive climate innovations to market. InvestHK will bridge innovators to Asia and beyond.”
Applications for TERA-Award 2026 are now open and will remain so until late April 2026. Roadshows are scheduled across Europe and Asia in the coming months to engage innovators worldwide. The previous edition, TERA-Award 2025, successfully attracted 785 projects and culminated in a well-received award ceremony at the University of Cambridge.
Innovators interested in submitting their entries can do so via the official website at www.tera-award.com. This is a prime opportunity for innovators to showcase their groundbreaking ideas in the global fight against climate change.
