URGENT UPDATE: Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has publicly acknowledged significant failures in the government’s flood response as the death toll from devastating floods has tragically risen to at least 162 people. This disaster, triggered by relentless heavy rains, has severely impacted over 1.4 million households and left 3.8 million people affected across 12 southern provinces.

During a news conference in Bangkok, government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed the grim statistics, highlighting that the majority of fatalities occurred in Songkhla Province, where at least 126 deaths have been reported. The scale of the flooding, which began last weekend, has incited widespread criticism of the government’s preparedness and response.

Prime Minister Charnvirakul expressed his sorrow, stating, “I apologize to the people that the government was unable to take care and protect them” during his visit to the affected areas. He announced plans to begin distributing compensation payments to those impacted by the floods starting next week, aiming to alleviate the suffering of those displaced.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that as of Saturday morning, water levels have started to recede in all affected provinces, allowing residents to return to their homes. However, the aftermath reveals a devastating scene, with furniture and personal belongings scattered across submerged floors.

The flooding has caused severe disruptions, stranding thousands and rendering streets impassable, while low-rise buildings and vehicles remain inundated. In Hat Yai, the largest city in Songkhla Province, rescue operations have intensified, leading to the recovery of more bodies from previously submerged residential areas.

In a significant gesture of support, King Maha Vajiralongkorn announced a donation of 100 million baht (approximately $A4.8 million) to Hat Yai Hospital, which has suffered extensive damage due to the floods. Furthermore, royal support will be extended for the funerals of all victims who lost their lives in this natural disaster.

This unfolding tragedy underscores the urgent need for effective disaster management strategies in Thailand. As recovery efforts ramp up, authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates on new developments and ongoing support for the affected communities.

Residents and families affected by this disaster urge immediate action and assistance as they begin the long road to recovery. The situation remains volatile, and the government faces increasing pressure to respond effectively to the crisis.
