UPDATE: Thailand’s military has issued a stark warning of potential self-defense measures following a serious incident involving landmines along the border with Cambodia. Just hours ago, Thai Army spokesman Major General Winthai Suvaree confirmed that a sergeant was severely injured on Tuesday morning while patrolling the border, stepping on an anti-personnel landmine attributed to Cambodia.

This alarming incident marks the fourth landmine injury in less than a month, raising significant concerns about the fragile ceasefire that was established on July 29 after five days of deadly clashes. The latest victim suffered severe injuries to his left ankle, underscoring the ongoing risk faced by Thai soldiers patrolling the disputed territory near the Ta Muen Thom temple, located approximately 1 kilometer from the incident site.

The conflict has already had devastating consequences, resulting in the deaths of dozens on both sides and displacing over 260,000 people. Major General Suvaree’s statement stressed that this incident is clear evidence of Cambodia’s violation of the ceasefire agreement and international humanitarian law, specifically the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel landmines.

In response to the escalating situation, Thailand’s military has indicated that while it has maintained a commitment to peaceful resolutions, it may be compelled to act defensively if violations persist. “Should circumstances become compelling, it may be necessary to exercise the right of self-defense under international law principles,” the statement warned.

Cambodia’s defense ministry has vehemently rejected these allegations, with spokeswoman Lieutenant General Maly Socheata calling them “baseless” and “deliberately misleading.” The tension between these two nations, who share an 800 km border, has a long history, with previous clashes igniting diplomatic rifts.

As this situation continues to develop, the international community will be watching closely. The potential for renewed conflict looms, with officials on both sides calling for restraint. The next steps will be crucial in determining whether the ceasefire can hold, or if further military action will be necessary.
