UPDATE: Thousands have gathered today to bid farewell to beloved Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. The memorial service took place on September 5, 2023, in Melbourne, just days after Thompson was set to retire—a poignant reminder of his dedication to service and community.

Approximately 3,000 mourners, including his partner, Sergeant Lisa Thompson, attended the heartfelt ceremony, while many more joined online to pay their respects. The emotional service followed the detective’s untimely death on August 26, during a shooting incident in Porepunkah.

Sergeant Thompson spoke tearfully about their life together, stating, “Meeting Thommo in 2016 changed the course of my life.” She expressed her gratitude for their final weekend together, calling it the best they shared. “I don’t want to live life without you,” she lamented. “But I promise I will be brave. I will cherish every moment.”

Thompson, a stalwart member of the Victoria Police, began his service at the police academy on September 14, 1987, and built a reputation as a dedicated officer. He was renowned for his investigative skills, including a notable case that led to the safe return of a four-year-old kidnapping victim. Colleagues praised his adventurous spirit, recalling fishing trips and daring escapades in the great outdoors.

Among the attendees, Detective Senior Constable Tim Doyle shared, “If you needed something found at a search warrant, you took Thommo with you.” The camaraderie and respect for Thompson were palpable as officers lined the streets, saluting his coffin as it left the chapel.

Family members, including his sister Lois Kirk, reflected on his childhood dreams and love for adventure. “He was our big brother,” she said. “One of the proudest days for mum and dad was when you graduated from the academy.”

Thompson was celebrated not only for his police work but also for his zest for life. Friend and fellow officer Jason Williams humorously likened him to Steve Irwin, highlighting his fearless nature and love for exploration.

The memorial service underscored the profound loss felt not just by his family, but by the entire community and law enforcement. “Neal would be loving all the attention, and rightly so,” said Leading Senior Constable Paul Campbell.

As the investigation into the shooting continues, the legacy of Detective Thompson remains strong, with many vowing to honor his memory and continue his commitment to serving the community. The outpouring of grief and love from friends, family, and colleagues speaks to the profound impact he had on everyone who knew him.

With the ongoing search for the perpetrator, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. The loss of Detective Thompson serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who protect and serve.
