UPDATE: Three youths are now in police custody following a devastating fire at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre, located approximately 50 km west of Launceston. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, with reports indicating the youths allegedly set fire to a section of the troubled facility, causing extensive damage.
Authorities received multiple emergency calls about armed youths at the detention centre. Upon arrival, Tasmania Police quickly apprehended the trio, who were found unarmed in an outdoor area. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported as a result of this alarming incident. Fire crews remain on-site, working diligently to extinguish the flames and assess the damage.
This latest incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny of the Ashley Youth Detention Centre, which has faced severe criticism in recent years. A 2023 report from a Tasmanian inquiry into institutionalized child sexual abuse recommended the immediate closure of the facility, citing it as a live child sexual abuse risk. However, plans to close the centre have faced delays, with the current closure date pushed back to early 2028 while a replacement facility is under construction.
This fire raises urgent questions about the safety and management of detention centres in Tasmania, particularly given the serious allegations surrounding the Ashley facility. As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
