UPDATE: A thrilling semi-final clash is set for Saturday, July 15, 2023, as Bullioh hosts Cudgewa in a match that could very well preview the grand final. With both teams having dominated the competition, anticipation is at an all-time high.
This isn’t just any match; it’s a fierce rivalry that has seen both clubs battle it out in the last two grand finals. Bullioh, the reigning champions, went through 2023 undefeated, culminating in a staggering 94-point victory over the Bulldogs in last year’s decider. But the Bulldogs are not to be underestimated, having shocked the Blues in last year’s final with a 35-point upset.
Their previous encounters in the current season have been nail-biters, with both teams winning two matches each in their four meetings, the largest margin being just 14 points when Cudgewa clinched the minor premiership in round 10.
Clint Brunnenmeyer, coach of Bullioh, stated he expects another tightly contested match, emphasizing, “I’m unsure who starts as favourites on Saturday. There is a bit of rain forecast, so it could come down to whoever adapts to the conditions first.”
With weather conditions playing a crucial role, fans are eager to see how both teams adjust their strategies. The Bulldogs made a surprising selection last week by including jockey Brodie Loy alongside veteran Clint Ried. Loy has not competed since early last month but could play a pivotal role this weekend.
Another key storyline is the performance of Cudgewa full-forward John Spencer, who is just five goals shy of reaching the coveted 100-goal milestone this season. He netted a remarkable seven goals against Bullioh in their last match, raising the stakes for his performance this weekend. Brunnenmeyer hopes to limit Spencer to fewer than five goals, reflecting on Tumbarumba’s success in restricting him to five in their last encounter.
“It would be nice if we could keep him to less than five goals,” said Brunnenmeyer. “James Well is our No. 1 defender and will get the match-up again.”
In a twist of fate, Bullioh may also see the return of midfielder Darcy McKimmie, who has been sidelined since round 7 due to what was initially thought to be a season-ending ACL injury. Rumors are swirling that McKimmie could make a comeback. Brunnenmeyer noted, “I’m hearing young Darcy McKimmie is going to try and play with a busted knee, which is interesting.”
As preparations intensify, both teams are strategizing for what promises to be an electrifying semi-final. The outcome will not only determine who advances but could also set the tone for the upcoming grand final, making this match a must-watch for all fans.
