URGENT UPDATE: A tiny outback town in Western Australia, Mullewa, is preparing for an unprecedented surge of tourists as the rare wreath flowers are set to bloom in just days. With a population of only 350 people, Mullewa is becoming the focal point for thousands of visitors eager to experience this stunning natural phenomenon.
Every year, tourists travel 450 kilometers north of Perth to witness the breathtaking display of lechenaultia macrantha, also known as wreath flowers. These unique circular blossoms are among the world’s rarest, only found in select locations. Natalie Hillier, manager of Mullewa’s visitor centre, stated that it’s already been a “brilliant year” for wildflowers and predicted the wreath flowers will reach full bloom very soon. She urged potential visitors to act fast: “They’re starting to bloom. A couple of hot days will see them pop into vivid hues of pink,” she explained. What sets wreath flowers apart is their striking circular shape and their preference for “disturbed clear spaces” such as road verges and gravel pits. Mullewa boasts the largest colony in the world, specifically located along a stretch of Beringarra-Pindar Road. Although similar flowers appear in nearby towns like Tardun and Canna, they pale in comparison to Mullewa’s impressive display. Botanists remain puzzled by the flowers’ growth patterns, making them a true wild treasure.
Every year, more than 12,000 species of flora bloom across Western Australia, with 60% of them found nowhere else on Earth. This attracts tourists from around the globe, all eager to witness the vibrant colors of the wildflower season. However, visitors are cautioned to prepare adequately as Mullewa has limited amenities, including a pub, a hotel, a caravan park, and a service station. There is no supermarket, and accommodations fill up quickly. Hillier noted, “It does get hectic,” urging tourists to plan their trips carefully.
“The best way to know exactly where to see the wreath flowers and other incredible species is to visit the visitor centre,” Hillier added. Visitors are reminded to respect the natural environment by not picking or trampling the flowers.
