UPDATE: The bush footy community mourns the loss of John Farragher, a legendary figure who passed away on November 1, 2023, at the age of 68. Known for his courage and commitment, Farragher’s impact was felt both on and off the field, inspiring countless players and fans.
Farragher’s journey began with the Gilgandra Panthers, where he made a name as a formidable prop before moving to the Penrith Panthers in the late 1970s. His promising career took a tragic turn in 1978 when a life-altering spinal injury left him a quadriplegic after a scrum collapse just seven games into his first-grade career. Despite this setback, he returned to the Panthers in 1982 and transformed his life through a public relations role at Panthers Leagues Club.
With a career spanning over 40 years, Farragher became a beloved member of the Penrith community and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2016 for his inspirational work. He was elected as a director at the Panthers in 2022, further solidifying his legacy.
In an emotional tribute, Peter Graham, chairman of the Panthers group, stated,
“John Farragher was, and will always be, a cornerstone of the Panthers family. His courage, warmth and commitment to our club inspired generations of players, staff and members.”
The club extended heartfelt condolences to Farragher’s family and friends as they navigate this difficult time.
Farragher’s connection to his hometown remained strong throughout his life. In 2016, he played a pivotal role in organizing a charity event in Gilgandra, raising over $60,000 for cancer research. The Gilgandra Panthers expressed their sorrow in a statement, calling him,
“A legend. A true gentleman. A Gilgandra Panther.”
As tributes continue to pour in, the legacy of John Farragher will undoubtedly inspire future generations in the bush footy community and beyond. Fans and friends are encouraged to share their memories and condolences as they celebrate the life of this remarkable individual.
