truganina-set-for-major-boost-with-80-000-native-plants

URGENT UPDATE: Truganina is gearing up for a significant boost in local biodiversity as plans for the new Hopkins Road bridge are set to introduce over 80,000 native trees and plants. This major landscaping initiative, part of a broader level crossing removal program, aims to enhance the local ecosystem and create thriving green spaces for residents.

New reports confirm that more than 200 native trees, including lightwood, river gum, and brittle gum species, will be planted along the project area. The initiative will also see a row of 39 lemon-scented gums lining a new shared walking and cycling path, providing both beauty and shade for pedestrians and cyclists.

Details reveal that approximately 35,000 square meters of land will be seeded with a diverse range of vegetation, which includes berry saltbush, prostrate acacia, creeping boobialla, dusky bells correa, common tussock-grass, and weeping rice-grass. This extensive planting program is designed to not only enhance aesthetics but also boost local wildlife habitats and strengthen biodiversity corridors.

The landscaping scheme was heavily influenced by community input, with residents consistently advocating for hardy native planting that complements Truganina’s unique environment. “The selected species are expected to thrive in local soil conditions while enhancing the area’s ecological health,” stated planners from Victoria’s Big Build project.

Earlier today, locals had the opportunity to engage with project team members during a community pop-up at the Mt Atkinson Market, where they were provided with detailed landscaping factsheets and had their questions answered.

Landscaping works are slated to commence in the coming months, with the new bridge expected to open to traffic in 2026. As the project progresses, residents can look forward to a revitalized environment that not only beautifies the area but also supports local biodiversity.
