UPDATE: Two 11-year-old boys have been charged in connection with a devastating bushfire that ravaged the coastal community of Geraldton in Western Australia. The fire, which ignited in the suburb of Spalding on November 28, destroyed one home and damaged multiple properties, causing widespread panic among residents.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire was set by the boys, who have been referred to the Juvenile Justice Team and charged with Breach of Duty. As the fire spread into bushland, it was initially extinguished by firefighters, only to reignite on Sunday due to severe weather conditions, including easterly winds gusting up to 80 km/h starting at 5:20 AM on Monday.
The blaze posed a significant threat to lives and property, forcing residents to evacuate and leading to school closures. Thousands were left without power as the fire encroached dangerously close to homes. A police spokesman stated that four juveniles were identified during the investigation into this suspicious fire.
“Lighting fires is extremely dangerous and can put lives and property at risk,” said a police representative. He emphasized gratitude towards the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) crews and local volunteers for their swift response in protecting the Geraldton community.
The human cost of this tragedy is profound. A GoFundMe page has been established to support Nic Morgan and Lyn Bartlett, who lost everything in the fire. Family member Allee Bartlett shared, “Devastatingly, they have lost absolutely everything. They returned to find that their beloved pet cat Smudge did not survive the fire. This loss has left them shattered.”
Additionally, Goodstart Early Learning Wonthella is fundraising for staff member Gail and her daughter, whose home was severely damaged in the blaze. “In a single night, their world changed — they lost precious belongings and the sense of safety every family deserves,” a spokesman stated.
Police are calling for public assistance. Anyone with information regarding suspicious behavior or bushfires is urged to contact Crime Stoppers, where rewards of up to $25,000 are available for information leading to the identification and conviction of an arsonist.
As investigations continue, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any unusual activity. The community’s resilience is being tested, but local efforts to support those affected are already underway. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
