UPDATE: Two teenagers have been charged following a dramatic police pursuit in Sydney’s west on Saturday night, September 30, 2023. The chase began around 9 PM when police attempted to pull over an allegedly stolen Citroen in Blacktown, sparking a chaotic scene that ended with a car crash and shots fired.
Authorities report the vehicle sped through multiple suburbs, ultimately crashing into a parked car on James St, Leichhardt, approximately half an hour away. As police tried to apprehend the driver, an officer discharged their firearm while another officer deployed a Taser. A 27-year-old officer sustained a minor head injury during the incident when he was allegedly struck by the vehicle’s door. Fortunately, he has since been released from the hospital.
The driver, a 17-year-old boy, and his accomplice, a 14-year-old girl, allegedly managed to escape a dead-end street by crashing into two parked cars and ramming three police vehicles before fleeing onto a footpath. The stolen vehicle was later discovered abandoned on Crystal St, Petersham.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with one local stating, “(Police) were shooting at the car. I felt like it was reversing back really fast.” Residents expressed astonishment that the vehicle initially evaded capture, especially given the location’s layout. “It’s amazing that the car they were pursuing got away,” one witness remarked.
Police apprehended the pair later that afternoon. The boy faces a total of 10 charges, including predatory driving, destruction of property, and assaulting a police officer without actual bodily harm. Meanwhile, the girl has been charged with being carried in a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner and breach of bail conditions. Both teenagers have been refused bail and are set to appear before a Childrens Court on Monday.
This incident has left local residents in disbelief, highlighting the risks and unpredictability of such police pursuits. As investigations continue, authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward.
