BREAKING: The United Kingdom, France, and Germany have just initiated a 30-day process to reimpose United Nations sanctions on Iran due to its controversial nuclear program. This decisive action, announced today, is set to escalate tensions in the region, particularly following recent military strikes by Israel and the United States against Iranian facilities.

In a swift response, Iranian officials condemned the move as detrimental to diplomatic efforts, asserting that Iran will not yield to pressure from the E3. A senior Iranian diplomat labeled the decision “illegal and regrettable,” yet acknowledged that Iran remains open to dialogue, stating, “Diplomacy with Europe will continue.”

The E3 aims to reinstate sanctions that were lifted under the 2015 nuclear accord, which Iran has allegedly violated. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot clarified that this decision does not signify a halt to diplomatic efforts, while German counterpart Johann Wadephul urged Iran to comply fully with the UN nuclear watchdog and engage in direct discussions with the US within the next month.

The UN Security Council will convene behind closed doors on September 30, 2023, to discuss the implications of the E3’s snapback mechanism against Iran. This development comes after several rounds of talks between Iran and the E3, which failed to yield satisfactory progress toward a new agreement.

The E3’s actions stem from serious accusations that Iran has breached the terms of the nuclear deal, which was intended to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for sanction relief. The US had previously exited the agreement in 2018, leading to Iran gradually abandoning its commitments under the deal.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed support for the E3’s latest move, reinforcing that the US remains available for direct engagement with Iran to find a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue. However, an Iranian source indicated that any negotiations would require guarantees from Washington against military strikes during talks.

Iran has warned of a “harsh response” if sanctions are reinstated and is considering options, including potential withdrawal from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The E3 has signaled readiness to extend the snapback process for up to six months, contingent on Iran permitting access to UN nuclear inspectors and engaging in meaningful talks.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called the E3’s decision “inevitable” and an “important step” in countering Iran’s nuclear ambitions. As the 30-day period unfolds, the global community will closely monitor Iran’s response and any potential developments regarding its nuclear agenda.

The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated, as the sanctions, if reinstated, will significantly impact Iran’s financial, banking, energy, and defense sectors, raising the stakes for regional stability and international relations.
