URGENT UPDATE: A groundbreaking initiative is transforming the lives of Ukrainians in war-torn regions as small-scale farming emerges as a vital lifeline. Just announced, the NGO Volonterska has rolled out a project providing greenhouses and seeds to communities devastated by Russian occupation, igniting hope for a sustainable future.
In the village of Studenok, just 20 km from ongoing conflict zones near Izyum and Donetsk, residents are reclaiming their livelihoods. “Just recently, I couldn’t have imagined knowing so much about growing cucumbers and tomatoes,” said Meriam Yol, who leads the NGO in Kharkiv. This initiative comes in the wake of September 2022‘s counteroffensive, which liberated territories once under Russian control.
The Deoccupation Store, a crucial support system, showcases fresh produce from these liberated areas. “At first, we delivered basics like food or clothes,” Yol recounted. “But we realized it’s important to help locals sustain themselves again.” The program has become essential for those who were left jobless after the invasion destroyed homes and infrastructure.
Villagers are now cultivating tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, with produce delivered weekly to Kharkiv. This initiative not only provides food but also ensures a modest income for farmers. “My family has lived here for generations,” said farmer Yulia Korchma, who returned to her land soon after liberation, despite the risk of unexploded shells and mines. “This year, I am growing sweet potatoes for the first time. Next year, I want to try asparagus,” she added, showcasing her resilience.
Greenhouses are a safer alternative to traditional farming methods in these mine-laden areas. Inside these structures, rows of vibrant peppers and cucumbers flourish, providing hope amid despair. With support from generous donors, the NGO has successfully purchased essential supplies, ensuring that the farming community can thrive despite the surrounding dangers.
As the situation remains volatile, with some locals forced to flee again due to renewed Russian advances, the program continues to be a beacon of hope for those determined to stay. Deliveries from the Bagazh marketing school serve as a crucial link between local farmers and restaurants, ensuring that the community’s efforts are recognized and rewarded.
This urgent development highlights the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people. As this initiative unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of a nation fighting to rebuild amidst chaos. Stay tuned for more updates on how agriculture is reshaping lives in Ukraine.
