UPDATE: A devastating landslide in western Kenya’s Rift Valley has led to at least 26 confirmed deaths as of November 2, 2025. Heavy rains that began late Friday night have caused widespread destruction, resulting in additional casualties and significant property damage, according to government officials.

More than 25 people are still missing, while 26 others have been rescued and are currently receiving treatment. Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura reported that military planes and disaster response specialists have been deployed to assist with ongoing search and rescue operations.

In a heartbreaking statement, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said, “Some families have lost more than five immediate relatives.” The emotional toll of this disaster is immense, with many ordinary Kenyans affected by the tragedy in areas like Sambirir, Endo, and Embobut Wards of Elgeyo Marakwet County.

The heavy rains have triggered landslides that engulfed homes in the Murkutwa, Embobut, and Chesongoch settlements. Boulders, mud, and floodwaters swept away livestock, crops, and homes, isolating remote farming communities. Police commander Zablon Okoyo stated, “The roads are totally broken. As we are talking, we are landlocked. There is no road movement here now.”

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings for continued heavy rains, predicting accumulations exceeding 30 millimeters in the coming days as the region remains in its rainy season. The risk of further landslides and flooding is high, prompting urgent calls for assistance.

In recent years, hundreds have died in Kenya due to landslides and flooding. Last year, the worst incident claimed 61 lives in mudslides and flash floods in central Kenya. Additionally, landslides in eastern Uganda have resulted in at least 13 fatalities just last week, as reported by the Uganda Red Cross.

As the situation develops, local leaders continue to address the needs of more than 2,000 displaced individuals currently sheltering at the Chesongoch Catholic Mission. The community’s resilience is being tested as they navigate this tragic event, and support from both national and international agencies is crucial.

Residents and authorities are bracing for what lies ahead. The immediate focus remains on rescuing those still missing and providing aid to those affected. As the rains persist, the call for vigilance and preparedness has never been more urgent.
