UPDATE: Families in Melbourne’s northern suburbs will soon experience a significant transportation upgrade with the rollout of 641 additional bus services starting on October 5, 2023. This major enhancement will impact eight key routes, improving accessibility in rapidly growing areas such as Craigieburn, Donnybrook, Kalkallo, and Roxburgh Park.
The state government has confirmed that these new services will extend to previously underserved regions and include later operating hours, making travel more convenient for residents. Notably, Route 543 will see an increase of 183 extra weekly trips, with service hours starting earlier and running late into the night. This route will connect Greenvale and Greenvale North to Craigieburn Central and Roxburgh Park Station, ensuring weekday buses run every 20 minutes during peak times, synchronized with train services.
Additionally, Route 524 will gain 173 new services and will be extended along Cloverton Boulevard to Kalkallo, facilitating access to Donnybrook Station and the Kallo Town Centre. Other routes, including 525, 528, 529, 533, and 537, will also benefit from a collective 285 extra weekly trips and extended hours, with some buses operating until midnight.
These upgrades are poised to greatly alleviate travel challenges for students, shift workers, and late-night commuters returning from sports or shopping. Residents of Beveridge will also notice improvements, as Route 511 is now rerouted via the Hume Highway to Craigieburn Station.
Public and Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams stated, “We understand the importance of frequent and reliable bus services for the growing communities in Melbourne’s north, which is why we’re adding extra services and extending local routes to improve connections.”
Local MPs echoed this sentiment. Ros Spence called the changes a “massive boost for local students, shoppers, and commuters,” while Lauren Kathage emphasized the 524 extension’s benefits for families. Iwan Walters noted that residents will be connected to the public transport network “for the first time,” enhancing their ability to reach work, school, and other key destinations.
For those looking to plan their journeys, full timetables and route details will be available from September 19 at transport.vic.gov.au.
This transportation overhaul is not just a logistical improvement; it represents a significant step forward for community connectivity and accessibility in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of these new services as they come online, making their daily commutes easier and more efficient.
