UPDATE: In a proactive move to combat potential grassfires this summer, Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has launched a major grass-slashing initiative across the Murray Goldfields District. Crews are set to slash a staggering 2,000 hectares across 700 locations in the coming weeks, as confirmed by acting manager Andrew Koren.
The urgent work focuses on public lands in Kyneton and Macedon, where long dry grass poses a significant fire risk. “One of the ways we reduce bushfire risk is by managing long dry grass through slashing, which complements other activities such as planned burning, mulching, and spraying,” stated Koren. This critical effort aims to minimize the fuel load for potential fires, thereby safeguarding communities.
Timing is crucial in this operation. Koren emphasized, “Grass slashing works are carefully timed to align with the anticipated increase in grass growth. If done too early, it will encourage regrowth and require follow-up treatment.” The team will begin their work in the northern areas of the district and move southward as conditions change.
The Murray Goldfields District is taking these measures seriously, as the risk of bushfires escalates. FFMVic crews engage in fire preparedness efforts year-round, striving to protect residents from the dangers posed by bushfires and grassfires. Koren urged local residents to take additional precautions: “We encourage residents to cut long grass, remove leaves and twigs from their yards, and clear flammable materials around their homes.”
Less fuel means a fire would be less intense and spread more slowly, allowing firefighters to maintain control before it threatens people, properties, and the environment. Residents who notice unaddressed areas of concern on public land before 19 December are encouraged to contact the DEECA Customer Service Centre at 136 186.
