UPDATE: A shocking new survey reveals that 73% of Australian travelers have fallen ill during their vacations, with one in four contracting gastroenteritis. This troubling trend highlights a pressing public health concern just as many Aussies gear up for their holidays.

The survey, conducted by Compare the Market in September 2025, surveyed 1,000 Australians and found that illnesses like gastro, flu, and food poisoning are rampant among holidaymakers. As the holiday season approaches, experts warn that travelers must be vigilant to avoid serious health issues.

According to Dr. Holly Seale, an associate professor at the University of NSW, exposure to new environments and different hygiene standards while abroad significantly increases the risk of illness. “Travelers often engage in riskier behaviors that they wouldn’t consider at home,” Dr. Seale stated. This includes neglecting hand hygiene and consuming questionable food and drink.

The data is alarming: 30% of both Generation X and Baby Boomers reported experiencing gastro while on vacation, while millennials lead with 38% suffering from food poisoning. Other reported ailments include respiratory infections, insect bites, and even serious injuries like burns and fractures.

Dr. Seale emphasizes the importance of taking precautions. She recommends consulting with a healthcare provider before traveling to ensure you are up-to-date on necessary vaccinations, such as for measles. Additionally, she advises travelers to avoid tap water in high-risk areas, use mosquito repellent, and steer clear of food that has been left out in the heat.

Despite popular belief, Dr. Seale refutes the notion that relaxation triggers illness. “It’s not scientifically supported; it’s likely just a coincidence,” she explained, suggesting that being aware of one’s health is more noticeable when everyday distractions fade away.

As holiday season approaches, the urgency for preventive measures has never been more critical. Travelers should remain alert and prioritize their health to ensure a safe and enjoyable vacation. With the high incidence of illnesses reported, it’s essential to spread the word and encourage friends and family to take necessary precautions.
