UPDATE: Health professionals in Australia are sounding the alarm over a dangerous scam involving AI-generated fake doctor profiles that are misleading unsuspecting patients online. The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has issued an urgent warning after uncovering these sophisticated fake accounts that provide harmful medical advice while falsely claiming regulatory approval.

The AMA’s alert comes as these fraudulent profiles become increasingly challenging to identify. AMA President Danielle McMullen stated, “AI is getting so advanced that it looks and feels real, but these are entirely fake. These aren’t real doctors. It’s not real health information.”

These scammers often make outrageous claims, using phrases like “something your doctor never told you” and promising “miracle cures.” Such tactics are not just misleading but could have serious health implications.

McMullen emphasized the importance of being vigilant, advising Australians to be wary of anything that sounds too good to be true. Common red flags include poor English, typos, and distinctly unrealistic images. “If someone’s got three arms, chances are it’s an AI profile,” she remarked, underscoring the absurdity of some fake images.

The AMA urges the public to consult a trusted GP for any health inquiries and to rely on reputable sources, including government and Department of Health websites. “As always, with any health question, our first piece of advice is ‘go see your GP’. We’re there and ready for any weird and wonderful question you may have,” McMullen added.

The situation is exacerbated by scammers impersonating legitimate medical professionals, complicating the public’s ability to discern credible health advice. McMullen is calling on social media companies to enhance their verification processes for real health providers and to take stronger action against the proliferation of these malicious fake accounts.

As artificial intelligence technology continues to evolve, the potential for misuse remains high. Australians are urged to remain cautious and report any suspicious profiles or information to authorities.

Stay informed and safe by verifying health information through trusted channels. The AMA continues to monitor this developing situation closely and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
