UPDATE: The Brimbank Council is urgently appealing to state and federal governments for increased funding to address a growing homelessness crisis in the municipality. During the August council meeting, officials endorsed a significant homelessness statement of commitment, highlighting critical service gaps that require immediate attention.
Brimbank Mayor Thuy Dang emphasized the pressing need for action, stating, “Local councils play an essential role in linking people to support services, but we lack a formal role in the homelessness service system. This responsibility lies with state and federal governments.” The council is demanding funding for a dedicated homelessness service in Brimbank, enhanced specialist alcohol and other drug (AOD) outreach services, and a local coordination model to unify housing, health, mental health, and AOD responses.
This plea comes as the region grapples with escalating homelessness rates, impacting vulnerable individuals who desperately require housing and support. Mayor Dang reiterated the council’s commitment to advocating for immediate solutions, underscoring that “the state and federal governments must work to bridge the critical service gaps essential for connecting individuals with the support they need.”
A spokesperson for the State Government of Victoria responded, stating, “We are working closely with specialist agencies to support those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.” The state invests $300 million annually in homelessness support services, with over $21.6 million allocated specifically to the Brimbank Melton area. This funding sustains essential services, including homelessness entry points in Sunshine and Melton, youth services, and individual case support.
In addition, the state government is channeling more than $6.3 billion through the Big Housing Build and Regional Housing Fund to deliver over 13,300 social and affordable homes across Victoria. However, local authorities argue that these measures are insufficient to meet the rising demand for immediate support.
The Federal Government also highlighted its significant investments in housing and homelessness prevention initiatives across Australia, stating it collaborates with local governments and services in Brimbank. Initiatives such as the National Agreement on Social Housing and Homelessness, the Reconnect Program, the Safe Places Emergency Accommodation Program, and the National Housing Infrastructure Facility are all part of the national strategy aimed at addressing homelessness effectively.
As the situation develops, the Brimbank Council continues to urge immediate and decisive action, emphasizing that the time for solutions is NOW. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and support initiatives aimed at alleviating this critical issue within the community.
This urgent call to action is not just a matter of policy; it directly impacts the lives of vulnerable residents in Brimbank who are at risk of homelessness. The council’s commitment to improve community health and wellbeing underscores the human element of this crisis, emphasizing the need for a unified response from all levels of government.
