urgent-cfa-issues-severe-bushfire-warning-for-otways-today

UPDATE: The CFA has issued an urgent warning for the Otways and Surf Coast today as bushfire threats escalate due to powerful winds and lightning-sparked fires. With conditions worsening, communities along the Great Ocean Road are advised to take immediate action to ensure their safety.

According to CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan, damaging winds between 60-80 km/h are forecast to persist throughout the day. This follows a series of lightning strikes in the past 24 hours that have ignited new fires in the region.

Heffernan, speaking from the State Control Centre earlier today, confirmed that four fires are currently active in the Otways. Firefighters successfully brought two of these blazes under control overnight, but concerns remain high for the other two fires due to the ongoing strong winds.

“With the winds that we are expecting to see across the Otways this morning, I’m very concerned for the Surf Coast,” Heffernan stated. “I’m making a very strong recommendation to think about what you’re doing today and to put your bushfire survival plan into action.”

Authorities estimate that approximately 300,000 hectares of land were burned statewide yesterday. Currently, 10 major fire fronts are active, with an additional 20 fires being monitored across local communities.

In total, there are 19 emergency warnings in place, alongside 16 Watch and Act notifications issued to local residents. Premier Jacinta Allan has urged communities to adhere strictly to emergency services’ advice throughout the day.

“I know how hard it is to leave your home not knowing when and what you will return to, but it has saved lives,” Premier Allan remarked. “Victorians should stay tuned to the Emergency Victoria app and local radio for real-time updates.”

The CFA continues to monitor the situation closely, with expectations of more fires igniting today due to additional lightning activity. Residents are strongly advised to prepare their bushfire survival plans and remain vigilant.
