UPDATE: The annual Christmas toy drive, led by Albury Police in collaboration with the army and local health services, calls for immediate public support to bring joy to children in hospitals this festive season. With the delivery date set for December 4, officials are urging community members to donate generously.
Launched in 2021, this heartfelt initiative has already garnered hundreds of donations, with up to 800 presents delivered in previous years. Detective Acting Inspector Troy Martin emphasizes the significance of these gifts, stating, “To get a present, to put a smile on a child’s face is just amazing.”
The appeal invites businesses and individuals alike to contribute toys priced between $20 and $30, ranging from basketballs to cuddly companions. This effort directly impacts young patients, from infants to teenagers, at Albury Wodonga Health. Nurse unit manager of pediatrics, Samantha Peet, shared, “It gives the kids that unfortunately end up in hospital at Christmas time a small gift so they can make a really challenging time just that little bit more fun.”
The local police station serves as a drop-off point, where donors can not only bring gifts but also capture a photo with their local police officers. Detective Acting Inspector Martin encourages community involvement, stating, “It’s as simple as that.”
In a bid to highlight the importance of kindness during the holiday season, Acting Senior Sergeant Justin Foots added, “It’s a good chance to think of those in a worse-off situation than ourselves over the Christmas period, particularly kids.”
This initiative is not just about giving; it’s about uniting the community to uplift those in need. As the holiday approaches, the urgency to contribute grows, making it a pivotal moment for the community to come together and support local children facing tough times in the hospital.
With the clock ticking down to delivery day, community members are encouraged to act swiftly. The joy of giving is just a toy away—help spread smiles this Christmas!
