UPDATE: A vital community conversation on men’s health just concluded in Hawkesbury on October 22, 2025, drawing significant local attention to the crucial relationship between men and their General Practitioners (GPs). Hosted by Susan Templeman, MP for Macquarie, and Dan Repacholi, MP for Hunter, the event engaged around 40 participants, including local councillors and health professionals, emphasizing the urgent need for men to openly discuss their wellbeing.
The event was a key part of Mr. Repacholi’s national outreach as Special Envoy for Men’s Health, aiming to listen directly to men about what healthcare services are effective and what improvements are necessary. Representatives from local organizations such as the Nepean Blue Mountains Prostate Cancer Support Group and the Hawkesbury Veteran and Family Hub contributed vital insights, showcasing a community eager to break old habits and rebuild trust in healthcare.
Participants openly addressed the cultural and emotional barriers that inhibit many men from seeking medical assistance. Stories shared revealed a troubling trend: many men delay GP visits until health issues become critical. Penrith Councillor Kirstie Boerst recounted her husband’s tragic misdiagnosis of pancreatic cancer, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced training and support for GPs to save lives.
Shane Dujric, a councillor from Hawkesbury, emphasized the necessity of integrating conversations about men’s wellbeing into daily life, stating, “There is no better time than now to start the conversation about men’s health.” The consensus was clear: the GP must be the first line of defense in men’s health, whether for mental health issues, routine checks, or cancer screenings.
Mr. Repacholi pointed out the lack of accessible information for men regarding local health resources. In response, attendees proposed creating a local health service directory, a crucial tool for GPs and allied health professionals to refer men to appropriate services efficiently.
In a promising development, Ms. Templeman announced the expansion of men’s health services in the Hawkesbury, including new outreach collaborations between primary care providers and community organizations. However, she acknowledged ongoing communication challenges among GPs, allied health services, and local programs. “The more we talk about men’s health—whether it’s physical, emotional, or mental—the more we normalize it,” she stated. “It all starts with seeing your doctor.”
The event also highlighted a generational shift in attitudes towards men’s health. Younger men are increasingly open to discussing mental health, while older generations raised on stoicism are beginning to seek help. Community organizations like Men’s Sheds and local walking groups were praised for their roles in fostering connections among men, promoting active and supportive environments.
The atmosphere of the evening was one of solidarity and shared purpose. Men who have faced serious health challenges connected with others who are still finding the courage to speak out. This camaraderie reinforced the fundamental truth: no man should face health struggles alone.
By prioritizing men’s health on the local agenda, the Hawkesbury community, backed by its federal leaders, is demonstrating that meaningful change begins with open dialogue and proactive measures.
