UPDATE: The Limestone Coast is grappling with a severe homelessness crisis, as rising housing costs and a shortage of rental properties leave families, youth, and older residents in desperate situations. New reports confirm that towns like Naracoorte are particularly hard-hit, with local charity ac.care warning of a “housing and cost-of-living storm” affecting the community.

Housing prices in the region have doubled over the past five years, pushing more individuals into precarious living situations. Trish Spark, senior manager at ac.care’s Homelessness and Community Services, shared alarming statistics regarding the growing number of people without secure accommodation. “Last financial year, we served 442 people, with 20% of those being youth,” Spark stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The implications of this crisis are profound. Rising rents are outpacing the ability of many locals to pay, especially those on low incomes or government assistance. Spark noted, “Even those who can afford rent are struggling to find housing, with increasing competition in the private rental market.” This reality has left many families without a safe place to call home.

Statistics reveal that the crisis is not just affecting youth; women aged 45-64 are increasingly seeking help. Data indicates that 55% of those affected by homelessness are women, while 24% are youth aged 15-25, and 14% are young children aged 0-9. These numbers underscore the widespread impact of the housing crisis on vulnerable populations.

“The demand for housing far exceeds availability,” Spark said. “Rising rents and a shrinking number of homes are creating a perfect storm for homelessness in our region.” Many individuals have reported not being able to find affordable rentals, with some stating that even property inspections are crowded with applicants.

Beyond housing shortages, many locals are struggling with the high costs of food and utilities. Spark explained, “If anything unexpected happens, they are unable to manage it as there is no opportunity to build savings.” The mounting pressure on public housing is exacerbating the crisis, pushing more individuals into unstable living conditions.

“Homelessness is everybody’s business,” Spark emphasized, calling for a collective community response to address the crisis. “A combined effort to target the cost of living and housing crisis is urgently required.”

Despite the challenges, Spark expressed hope that concerted efforts from government, businesses, and the community can help alleviate the crisis. “It will take a significant increase in available housing and mental health services to turn the tide,” she noted.

For those in need of assistance, ac.care is available across the Limestone Coast. Support can be accessed at ac.care.org.au or by calling 1300 ACCARE (1300 222 273). The urgency of the situation demands immediate attention and action from all sectors of society.

This crisis is developing rapidly and requires a multi-faceted solution. Residents are urged to stay informed and support local initiatives aimed at combating homelessness in the Limestone Coast.
