urgent-cure-for-vinod-drive-seeks-stem-cell-donors-now

UPDATE: An urgent drive titled ‘Cure for Vinod’ is actively seeking stem cell donors TODAY at the Toongabbie Community Centre in Sydney. Young South Asians are taking immediate action to join the stem cell registry, hoping to save 46-year-old Vinod, a father and husband battling aggressive blood cancer.

The event, held on July 15, 2023, was organized by Vinod’s family and friends, in collaboration with Stem Cell Donors Australia, Pink Sari Inc, and the Women in Health Network. The community is rallying to address the critical shortage of stem cell donors, especially among South Asians.

Why This Matters NOW: With only 185,000 registered donors in Australia, less than 0.7% of the population, the chances of finding a match are slim. A staggering 80% of stem cell donations for Australian patients come from overseas, making local drives vital.

“It’s in our blood,” said Devavrath, a 24-year-old singer and law student who registered at the event. He emphasized that increasing awareness and participation among South Asians can significantly enhance the odds for patients like Vinod.

According to Stem Cell Donors Australia, stem cells play a life-saving role in treating blood disorders such as leukaemia. The process for donors includes a simple swab test, followed by a potential match that could change a life forever. Once registered, donors are contacted only if they match a patient in need, ensuring a focused approach to donor involvement.

Statistics reveal a pressing need for more South Asians in the registry. While there are nearly 1 million registered donors in India, this represents only 0.06% of the Indian population, severely limiting the chances of finding matches. Anubha Varma, a breast cancer survivor and Pink Sari Inc ambassador, highlighted that the low representation is often due to a lack of awareness rather than cultural barriers.

The drive has already seen 24 new registrants, but more participation is urgently needed. Each donor registration presents a potential lifeline for Vinod and others facing similar health battles.

For those eligible, aged 18-35, the time to act is NOW. Every swab taken is a step towards potentially saving a life. Click here to join the stem cell donor registry and help make a difference.

As the community unites for this noble cause, the message is clear: more registrants mean greater chances to help people like Vinod. Your simple act of kindness could be the gift of life.
