URGENT UPDATE: Police have just seized an astonishing 40 kilograms of cocaine from a vehicle on the Hume Freeway, with an estimated street value of $14 million. This major drug bust occurred at approximately 6:20 AM on September 16, 2023, in Kalkallo, as authorities believe the drugs were being transported from the NSW border.
Two men from Melbourne, aged 19 and 20, have been charged with large commercial quantity cocaine trafficking and possession. They are currently remanded in custody and are set to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court this Wednesday.
Police spokespersons assert that the suspects were allegedly using vehicles to transport illicit drugs across state lines for a larger criminal syndicate. The investigation is still ongoing, indicating that more developments may be expected in the coming days.
This significant seizure follows a similar operation on August 13, where Viper Taskforce officers uncovered cocaine in a truck driven by David Woodbury, a father of three, at a Chiltern rest area. Woodbury, who was allegedly acting on behalf of a high-level criminal organization, was found with bricks of cocaine worth millions. He reportedly received only $5,000 for his role in transporting the drugs and has been denied bail, with his next court appearance scheduled for November 20.
Detective Inspector Jamie Walker addressed the grave implications of drug trafficking, stating, “Drugs cause destruction to people and communities. They have immense human and economic costs.” He emphasized that preventing these drug profits from funding further criminal activities is crucial.
Police have previously seized an additional five kilograms of cocaine from a residence in Howlong on July 30. The ongoing battle against drug trafficking remains a top priority for Victoria Police, as they maintain a zero-tolerance approach toward those who inflict harm through illegal drug importation and distribution.
With this latest bust, authorities are determined to dismantle the networks behind such crimes, aiming to reduce the devastating impact of drugs on society. As investigations continue, the community is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
