UPDATE: A major manhunt is currently underway following a dramatic late-night police pursuit in Blacktown, Sydney, where a suspected stolen car rammed police vehicles and shots were fired. The incident began at approximately 9:15 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2023, when NSW Police attempted to stop a suspected stolen Citroen sedan. When the vehicle failed to halt, a high-speed chase ensued through multiple suburbs, ultimately leading to Leichhardt.
During the intense standoff, the suspect crashed into two parked cars and rammed three police vehicles. The situation escalated when the car reversed into a 27-year-old officer, causing him to fall and sustain a concussion. He was taken to the hospital but has since been released.
Acting Superintendent Adam Solah confirmed that one officer fired their weapon while another deployed a taser, but the driver managed to flee the scene. Shortly after, police located the abandoned vehicle in a driveway in Petersham and have initiated a search for the suspected offenders.
“We’re very lucky that no one was killed, including police,” said Acting Supt Solah. “The police were out there on the street trying to arrest these two balaclava-wearing offenders, and a number of people were all run over.” His statements highlight the reckless and dangerous behavior exhibited by the driver during the pursuit.
In a separate incident on Friday, police arrested a 36-year-old man in Sydney’s northwest following another chase and standoff. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including possessing a firearm without a permit, drug possession, and various driving violations. He is expected to appear before Parramatta Bail Court later today.
As authorities continue their search for the suspects involved in the Blacktown incident, the community remains on high alert. This urgent situation underscores the growing concern over public safety amidst rising crime rates in urban areas. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
