BREAKING: The manhunt for Dezi Freeman, the accused double murderer, intensifies as thousands gather to honor fallen Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart. Freeman remains at large after allegedly shooting two police officers during a confrontation in Porepunkah, approximately 300 km northeast of Melbourne, on August 26.
Authorities report no confirmed sightings of Freeman, fueling concerns that he is receiving assistance from within his network. More than 100 properties in the Alpine area have been searched, but challenging weather conditions are complicating efforts.
The heartfelt funeral for Vadim de Waart-Hottart took place at the Victoria Police Academy on Friday, drawing a crowd of over 1,000 mourners. The 34-year-old officer was celebrated as a devoted protector and Batman enthusiast. His family, including parents Carolina de Waart and Alain Hottart, traveled from Belgium to pay their respects. A poignant eulogy delivered by his brother, Sacha de Waart-Hottart, depicted him as a “ray of sunshine” and a personal superhero.
In a show of solidarity, the police air wing conducted a flyover as officers formed a guard of honor for the hearse carrying his body. The second officer killed, Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, will be laid to rest on Monday.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush reiterated the commitment to capturing Freeman, stating, “This matter must be resolved.” The search operation is one of Australia’s largest, involving over 400 officers and support from the Australian military, which is providing air surveillance and planning specialists.
As the investigation continues, police have explored every avenue, including offering a financial reward for information leading to Freeman’s capture. The urgency of the situation remains high as the community mourns the loss of their heroes and seeks justice.
