urgent-manhunt-continues-for-armed-suspect-after-police-killings

UPDATE: A manhunt is intensifying for Dezi Bird Freeman, the suspect in the fatal shooting of two police officers in Porepunkah on August 26, 2023. As of this morning, Freeman remains heavily armed and at large, prompting urgent warnings for local residents to stay indoors.

Freeman allegedly shot and killed a detective, aged 59, and a 35-year-old senior constable during a police operation at his residence on Rayner Track, where sex offence detectives executed a warrant around 10:30 AM. Following the incident, a third officer was injured but survived. Authorities confirm Freeman fled into the bush after the incident, armed with multiple firearms, including those used in the attack.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush stated, “He has longarms, powerful firearms, multiple firearms. We believe he still possesses the firearms he used.” A massive search operation is underway, with police acknowledging Freeman’s expertise in bushcraft, making him a formidable fugitive in the rugged terrain.

Residents are on high alert as police enforce a wide cordon around the crime scene. “We have a very, very wide search area,” Bush added during a press briefing. “Experts, the best in the country, are working diligently to apprehend this suspect.” The community has been urged not to engage with Freeman, described as extremely dangerous. “Don’t support this person,” Bush warned. “He has killed two police officers and injured a third.”

Freeman’s family members were initially unaccounted for, but police have since established contact with his partner, ensuring there is no hostage situation. The identities of the deceased and injured officers have not yet been released, as police are waiting to inform all relatives first.

Local authorities are receiving intelligence and information about Freeman, who has a history of erratic behavior, including attempts to arrest a magistrate and impersonating a volunteer firefighter. Alpine Mayor Sarah Nicholas expressed community shock over the violent incident, emphasizing the need for safety and vigilance.

As the manhunt enters a critical phase, police are committed to finding Freeman. “The hunt will continue until we find him,” Chief Commissioner Bush reaffirmed. For those in the area, remaining indoors and reporting any suspicious activity is vital as the situation develops.
