UPDATE: The manhunt for alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman has entered its third week, with law enforcement intensifying efforts in Mount Buffalo National Park. As of October 25, 2023, police are conducting the largest tactical operation in Australia’s history, searching dense bushland for Freeman, who is linked to the tragic deaths of officers Neal Thompson and Vadm De Waart-Hottart.

Authorities confirmed that Special Operations police were spotted in the national park early Wednesday morning, continuing a relentless search that has now spanned over three weeks. Police helicopters are actively patrolling the area as investigators work tirelessly to track down Freeman, who remains at large.

Adding to the community’s distress, a conman has been allegedly impersonating police officers to solicit donations for the families of the slain officers. The fraudster has reportedly targeted local residents, seeking between $500 and $2,500 in donations under false pretenses. Victoria Police urges anyone receiving such calls to report them immediately, emphasizing that the only recognized fundraiser is through Victoria Police Legacy.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Russell Barrett stated on October 22 that search operations are focused around the Porepunkah area. “Over 125 specialist detectives are combing through rugged terrain, including caves, rivers, and abandoned structures,” Barrett explained. “This search encompasses hundreds of properties, and operations will continue until Freeman is found.”

Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities regarding Freeman’s fate. “He may be in the area, he may be harbored, he may be dead,” Barrett noted, highlighting the uncertain outcome of this extensive search.

As the search continues, the Victorian government has announced a $2.5 million support package for Porepunkah residents affected by the manhunt. This includes $5,000 grants for businesses that have faced significant disruptions, alongside funding to boost community activities and tourism in the region.

In a significant development, police are offering a $1 million reward for information leading to Freeman’s capture. Since the search began, authorities have received over 1,100 pieces of information, yet they have not secured any substantial leads.

The community remains on high alert as the manhunt continues. Residents and local businesses are encouraged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity. As the situation develops, all eyes are on law enforcement as they work to bring this urgent manhunt to a conclusion.
