urgent-rain-alert-bendigo-braces-for-up-to-60mm-this-weekend

UPDATE: Residents of Bendigo are urged to prepare for a significant rain event this weekend, with forecasts predicting up to 60 millimetres of rain from Friday through Sunday. The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that a slow-moving rain band, accompanied by cold fronts, will impact the area, bringing heavy precipitation and strong winds.

Rainfall totals are expected to range from 30mm to 60mm across the three days, significantly surpassing Bendigo’s typical July average of 52.2mm. Earlier this month, the city recorded 36.6mm as of July 22, indicating a pressing need for more rain to meet the seasonal average.

The Bureau’s spokesperson emphasized, “Friday and the weekend will see a more substantial rain band moving over Victoria.” This forecast comes as Bendigo has faced below-average rainfall for the past three Julys, with totals consistently under 50mm since 2022. For reference, the highest daily rainfall at Bendigo Airport in July was 30.2mm on July 24, 2003.

Currently, Bendigo’s winter rainfall stands at 101.8mm as of July 22, while the average for the season is 156.6mm. Historical data shows that the old Bendigo Prison site recorded a staggering 49.3mm on July 11, 1933, highlighting the potential for significant rainfall this weekend.

Residents should remain vigilant as the rain front approaches. Authorities recommend securing outdoor items and preparing for possible disruptions. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds could impact travel and local infrastructure.
