The release marks only the third time in 18 years that Dr. Gabi Tobias, a veterinarian at Taronga Wildlife Hospital, has had the privilege to witness such a recovery. “So many of the animals we get in, particularly turtles, don’t ever get released,” Dr. Tobias told Yahoo News, emphasizing the emotional weight of the moment. The urgency of Brownie’s situation highlighted the critical need for awareness as many turtles succumb to injuries caused by human activity.
Brownie’s journey to freedom began when she was admitted in January after being found with multiple hooks embedded in her left shoulder and 1.67 meters of fishing line in her body. Despite the extensive treatment she underwent, which lasted over eight months and included surgery and rehabilitation at Sea Life Aquarium, the team was dedicated to her recovery.
Video footage captures the exhilarating moment as Brownie splashed joyfully back into the water at Manly, showcasing her strength as she dove deep into the ocean. “You can see it when you take them on the boat, and they have the smell of the ocean; they get excited,” Dr. Tobias recounted. “She knew exactly where she needed to be.”
However, the team at Taronga Wildlife Hospital is bracing for a busy summer. Currently, they are caring for a 110 kg loggerhead turtle and another green turtle that had to have a flipper amputated. The ongoing challenges faced by marine wildlife, primarily due to human impact, continue to grow. Dr. Tobias warns that without significant changes in behavior, the plight of these creatures is likely to persist.
“We can mitigate some harm by not leaving fishing hooks and lines in the water,” she advised. “Being aware when driving boats is crucial; there could be animals in the water that you could run over.”
