UPDATE: A 63-year-old cave explorer has been successfully rescued after being injured by falling rocks in the Abisso Paperino cave system, located in Italy’s northwestern Piedmont region. The incident occurred on Sunday, when the man fell approximately 40 metres below the surface during a group outing.
Authorities from Italy’s mountain rescue corps confirmed that rescuers swiftly mobilized to the scene, employing explosives to widen critical passageways in the narrow terrain. Their efforts allowed them to navigate through two challenging 15-metre vertical shafts and a series of tight winding passages to reach the trapped explorer.
Once located, the injured man was treated inside a heated tent by medical teams while the escape route was being cleared. Remarkably, he is reported to be in good condition, despite sustaining a head injury during the incident.
The Abisso Paperino cave system extends an impressive 170 metres underground, situated near the town of Ormea in Cuneo province. This incident highlights the risks associated with caving, particularly in challenging and remote environments.
