urgent-toy-drive-aims-to-bring-joy-to-1-000-refugee-kids

UPDATE: The annual Christmas Toy Drive, organized by the western suburbs-based not-for-profit West Welcome Wagon, is officially underway, aiming to provide a joyful holiday for children from asylum seeker and refugee families. This year, the drive is set to deliver gifts to over 500 families across Melbourne’s west, ensuring that their children have presents to unwrap on the morning of December 25, 2025.

Donations are already being accepted at multiple Bendigo Bank branches located in Seddon, Altona, Laverton, and Williamstown. Additionally, supporters can drop off gifts at the Sunshine office of Fraser MP Daniel Mulino or at the West Welcome Wagon warehouse in Sunshine West.

Colette McInerney, Chief Executive of West Welcome Wagon, emphasized the urgent need for contributions, particularly for young people aged 11 to 16. “Each Christmas, West Welcome Wagon delights in providing gifts to more than 1,000 children from asylum seeker and refugee families across Melbourne’s west,” said McInerney. “This tradition is only possible because of the kindness of our community. Right now, we’re urgently needing gifts for young people aged 11 to 16. Any support you can offer will make a world of difference.”

The toy drive commenced on November 18 and has already seen a wave of community generosity. McInerney expressed gratitude towards those who have donated thus far, stating, “Your generosity brings joy where it’s needed most.”

The drive not only provides gifts but also fosters a sense of community and hope among families who often face significant challenges. As the holiday season approaches, every donation counts in making a positive impact in the lives of these children.

What’s Next: The West Welcome Wagon will continue to accept donations until the toy drive concludes, with volunteers preparing to wrap and distribute gifts in time for Christmas. This initiative highlights the importance of community support during the festive season and encourages all to participate in making a difference.
