A devastating crowd surge at the Swamy Venkateswara Temple in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh has resulted in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries. The incident unfolded as hundreds of devotees gathered to observe Ekadashi, a significant day in Hinduism dedicated to fasting and prayers for Lord Vishnu.
The tragedy struck earlier today when an iron grille intended to regulate the flow of worshippers collapsed, triggering chaos among the crowd. Senior police officer KV Maheswra Reddy confirmed the details to the Associated Press, highlighting the chaotic conditions that led to the surge.
Initially reported as seven deaths, Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar, a senior local government official, later confirmed that two additional individuals succumbed to their injuries, with two others critically injured. Among the deceased, eight were women and one was a child.
Currently, at least 16 devotees are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while another 20 individuals are under observation due to shock. Distressing footage from local media captured onlookers rushing to assist those who had fainted, desperately trying to revive them in the aftermath of the surge.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh’s chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu have expressed profound sorrow and offered condolences to the bereaved families.
Crowd surges at religious events are unfortunately common in India, where large gatherings often exceed local infrastructure and security capacities. Just a few months ago, a similar incident at a temple in northern India left at least six people dead.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging for improved safety measures at such gatherings to prevent future tragedies. The community remains in shock as they mourn the loss of life and grapple with the aftermath of this heartbreaking event.
