A devastating crowd surge at the Swamy Venkateswara Temple in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh has resulted in at least nine fatalities and numerous injuries. Initially reported as seven deaths, Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar, a senior local government official, later confirmed that two additional individuals succumbed to their injuries, with two others critically injured. Among the deceased, eight were women and one was a child.
Currently, at least 16 devotees are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital, while another 20 individuals are under observation due to shock. Distressing footage from local media captured onlookers rushing to assist those who had fainted, desperately trying to revive them in the aftermath of the surge.
