UPDATE: A tragic plane crash in the Snowy Mountains has left authorities presuming pilot David Stephens dead, following a devastating impact that police describe as “unsurvivable.” Emergency services were alerted at 4:35 PM on July 15, 2023, about a possible crash near Dargals Trail in the Snowy Valleys.
In a press conference, Riverina Police District Commander Superintendent Andrew Spliet confirmed the severity of the situation, stating, “You wouldn’t recognize it as an aeroplane.” The force of the crash was so immense that the aircraft was completely destroyed, with police now focused on recovery efforts.
Authorities report that conditions in the mountainous terrain have hampered search and recovery operations. Superintendent Spliet highlighted the challenging landscape: “It was very difficult to get to… steep, overgrown terrain complicated the initial search efforts.” However, with improving weather conditions, air assets are now being deployed to locate the wreckage.
Stephens, a resident of Brogo and an experienced pilot, went missing after flying from Moruya Airport to Frogs Hollow earlier that day. His partner, Lynda Leigh, expressed her heartache and uncertainty surrounding his fate. “We have to assume he must have seen a way over the mountain to decide not to turn back to Wangaratta,” she stated, emphasizing the unpredictability of mountain weather.
The community has rallied around Leigh as she navigates this difficult situation, expressing gratitude for the support from emergency services. “David has quite a bit of experience flying the plane, but we can’t know what situation he was facing,” she added.
Stephens was not only a devoted pilot of his 1966 Debonair named “Deb,” but also a respected member of the local motorsport community. As a committee member of the Frogs Hollow Flyers, he contributed significantly to various events, including a recent fly-in that hosted 25 aircraft.
Friends and colleagues reflect on his character, with Tony Rettke, president of the Frogs Hollow Flyers, recalling Stephens as an honest man who was deeply committed to both flying and rally sport. “He did his job well… and had a major role in a recent fly-in,” Rettke said, showcasing the impact Stephens had on those around him.
The search for the wreckage continues, with investigators focusing on determining the cause of the crash and confirming the pilot’s identity. As the recovery operation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for answers, while grappling with the loss of a beloved figure.
As this situation develops, further updates will be provided. The emotional toll on the community and the family continues to grow, highlighting the urgent need for closure in this tragic incident.
