UPDATE: The US military has launched a lethal strike against alleged drug smugglers in the Caribbean Sea, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, as confirmed by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This operation marks the latest in a series of aggressive actions against narcotics trafficking, with 15 strikes conducted since early September.

In a statement on social media, Hegseth revealed that the vessel involved was operated by a US-designated terrorist organization, but did not disclose the group’s identity. He emphasized, “This vessel—like EVERY OTHER—was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and carrying narcotics.”

With this strike, the US military’s operations in the Caribbean have now resulted in at least 64 fatalities linked to drug cartels. Former President Donald Trump has defended these military actions as a necessary escalation in the fight against drug trafficking, framing the situation as an “armed conflict” with drug cartels akin to the post-September 11 war on terrorism.

The White House is under pressure from Senate Democrats, who have called for detailed information regarding the legal justification for these strikes. A letter sent to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard by prominent senators, including Chuck Schumer, demands clarity on which groups are targeted and the rationale behind the military force used.

Hegseth reiterated the urgency of the situation, saying, “Narco-terrorists are bringing drugs to our shores to poison Americans at home,” asserting that the defense department will address them “EXACTLY how we treated Al-Qaeda.”

Earlier today, Senate Armed Services Committee leaders released letters seeking the legal basis for the military’s actions, which were sent late last month. The letters highlight concerns over the administration’s inconsistent communication about the strikes and the entities labeled as terrorist organizations.

As this situation develops, the spotlight remains on the US military’s ongoing operations and the administration’s response to mounting pressure for transparency regarding its legal frameworks and operational details.
