URGENT UPDATE: Vale Base Metals (“VBM”) has officially launched operations of its second nickel processing furnace, known as “Furnace 2,” at the Onça Puma Mining Complex in southeastern Pará, Brazil. This significant development, announced on September 30, 2025, substantially enhances the facility’s production capacity, positioning VBM for robust growth and profitability in the global nickel market.

With the introduction of Furnace 2, Onça Puma solidifies its status as the largest ferronickel operation in Brazil, adding an impressive 15 kilotons of nickel production capacity. This brings the total nameplate production capacity to 40 ktpa, marking a critical milestone for VBM’s operations. The project was completed on schedule and achieved nearly 13 percent cost savings, showcasing the company’s commitment to operational excellence.

CEO Shaun Usmar praised the team for their dedication, stating,

“This investment and successful delivery of the project further demonstrates VBM’s commitment to Pará and Brazil, while ensuring our world-class operations remain globally competitive.”

He acknowledged Kilma Cunha and her team’s efforts in making this project a reality, emphasizing the importance of delivering on commitments to support future copper growth investments in Brazil.

The completion of Furnace 2 has had a substantial positive impact on local employment, generating 2,500 jobs during the construction phase. With over 1,800 permanent employees and contractors, the Onça Puma Mining Complex is a vital hub for economic development in the region, contributing to local income generation and socioeconomic advancement.

This development is crucial as VBM aims to meet its 2025 nickel production guidance of 160-175 kt. The ramp-up of operations at Furnace 2, combined with ongoing underground mining at Voisey’s Bay in Canada, is projected to elevate nickel production to between 210 kt and 250 kt by 2030.

Since its inception in 2011, Onça Puma has positioned Brazil as a strategic exporter of nickel, crucial for the stainless-steel industry. The complex is dedicated to fostering socioeconomic development within its communities through local employment, tax contributions, direct investment, and local procurement.

As VBM continues to expand its footprint in the nickel market, the launch of Furnace 2 is a pivotal moment that underscores the company’s strategic vision and commitment to sustainable growth. The industry will be closely watching how this expansion impacts both local economies and global nickel supply chains.
