UPDATE: Confidence among Victorian farmers has surged to its highest level in over four years, according to the latest Rabobank Rural Confidence Survey released just this month. The survey reveals that net rural confidence in Victoria now stands at 24 percent, marking a significant increase from 21 percent in the previous quarter.

In a striking contrast to the national trend, where farmers across Australia reported declining confidence, Victoria remains a beacon of optimism. This surge is attributed to expectations of improving seasonal conditions, robust commodity prices—especially in the livestock sector—and promising international market opportunities.

The Rabobank survey, completed in October 2023, indicates that a substantial 45 percent of Victorian farmers expect farm business conditions to remain stable over the next 12 months, a notable increase from 33 percent last quarter. Additionally, 39 percent anticipate conditions will improve, despite a slight decrease from 41 percent previously. Conversely, the number of farmers with a negative outlook has sharply declined to 15 percent, down from 20 percent.

Farmers are increasingly optimistic about the upcoming season, with 57 percent expressing positive expectations—up from 52 percent last quarter. Furthermore, 56 percent remain hopeful regarding commodity prices, and 21 percent foresee international markets benefiting their businesses, an increase from 19 percent.

However, challenges persist. Concerns about drought remain high, affecting 41 percent of respondents, while rising input costs continue to trouble 38 percent, though this is a slight decrease from 40 percent previously.

The findings of this survey underscore a significant moment for Victoria’s agricultural sector, reflecting a renewed sense of confidence that could have lasting impacts on local economies. As farmers gear up for what they hope will be a prosperous year ahead, the focus remains on sustaining this positive momentum.

WHAT’S NEXT: Farmers and stakeholders will be closely monitoring seasonal developments and commodity prices in the coming months. With the agricultural landscape in flux, all eyes will be on how these factors influence ongoing confidence levels in the Victorian rural sector.
